The Humber Industrial Cluster Plan team are pleased to announce the publication of our Water Study, completed by Element Energy. The report outlines how essential water is, as a key resource required for the decarbonisation of the Humber industrial cluster and should be considered in parallel to plans to reduce CO2 emissions. Water availability is likely to be a significant constraint in the Humber region without effective management of supply and demand. Electrolytic hydrogen (also known as Green Hydrogen) is likely to develop the highest water demand in the Humber, with increased water use predicted for both blue hydrogen production and carbon capture and storage technologies.
The report was launched on Wednesday 8th February at the Humber Environmental Managers Conference held at CATCH. Conor O’Sullivan, Senior Consultant with Element Energy presented findings of the report to key stakeholders from the industry, the Environment Agency, and water suppliers in the region. Water stress, climate change, water abstraction and population growth, all present an increased demand for water and a potential barrier to deployment of hydrogen and CCS technologies. Industries are likely to need to adopt a circular approach, optimise processes and find synergies within the Humber cluster to promote efficient transfer of water around the region as well as working closely with water suppliers to ensure long term strategies for water supply are in place.
